Background

Friends: Only you and your priest need know! You have earned the trust of a priest, initiate, cultist or some other member of religious faith. This person is available for spiritual guidance, but their loyalty lies first with their cult or deity. This character will be of help to you only as long as you show respect for their beliefs. Do not expect any magical healing from this contact, nor for the entire temple staff to help you out of a tight spot, but if you are devout and faithful you may be able to gain their trust over time.
Enemies: Enemy of the state! You are accused (with a 25% chance of actually being guilty) of a crime against the Empire or another nation. You have (perhaps unwittingly) sold state secrets, killed a member of government, committed heresy or defamation or some other unforgivable crime. You are labelled a traitor in your homeland and will face execution if you are captured. The only way to escape this fate is to clear your name by finding the true criminal(s) or by setting up a scapegoat.

Martin is a young upstart in the Sigmar church, with a strong and nearly unshakable faith. However, his home and family life was unstable, and very easily shattered when he was a small child. There had been such an age difference between his older brother and himself that he was long gone before Martin really knew him, having gone off in the world to find his own place. Once the middle brother had shown promise as a mage he was taken away to study in the academies in Altdorf, leaving Martin alone with his parents. For a few years Martin lived with his parents in a relatively normal life, growing up on the stories of Sigmar that any child of the empire has heard a hundred times. They instilled in him strong discipline and the willingness to further the standing of the empire in the world, as long as the means are just.

The death of Martin's parents left him with nothing. It was the church of Sigmar that took him in after their deaths, raising him in the traditions and beliefs of the church. Martin spent a great deal of his time reading the history books of the library, and commting to memory the stories and prayers of Sigmar.

The Dream

"as recalled"

Bretonnia

Martin's travels in Bretonnia have opened his eyes to the culture of this neihgboring country... and he doesn't like what he sees. To him, everything seems backwards, behind. The nobles lord their superiority over the peasants, asking for sacrifice on the part of the peasents for no reward, no payment. The caste system seems to do its best to keep the rich rich, and the poor poor, though the rich need not earn their place. The peasants toil endlessly all their lives, and though they work for the good of their lord they'll likely never see a crown between three of them. Technology seems lacking, and the motivation to uncover anything new is replaced by disgust and a misplaced sense of chivalry and honor.

The outrage in Martin becomes especially acute due to his knowledge of the history of the empire. An ancient betrayal by a tribe of men who turned their backs on Sigmar and his empire at the time of greatest need. As the orcs descended on the fledgling empire, this tribe of men cowardly fled beyond the mountains, foolishly believing that even if the empire should perish they would survive the onslaught. To further compound this betrayal, this tribe turned away from worship of the old gods in favor of a witch, a heretic. This foolish and traitorous tribe of men are called the Bretonnians.

For now there is a more ancient evil to deal with: Chaos and a new threat have come to light-Druchii. However, the more and more Martin sees, the further and further he beccomes convinced that Bretonnia needs the Empire to step in and save the people from themselves. And if they will not allow the Empire to help them, then the wrathful fires of sigmar must consume them along with their witch.
